UGANDA CLASS OF 2022 VISIT

July 2022

TRIP BACKGROUND

After visiting Uganda in 2019, I had vowed to keep the project alive, not even a pandemic could stop Team 2022. Just like all the previous groups the Class of 2022 thrived in challenging conditions. They amazed Mrs Gammon and myself with their resilience and determined work ethic allowing The Good Samaritan to be transformed.

The main task for this group was to ensure the school was back up and running after an extended closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Ugandan schools were closed from March 2020 until January 2022 and as no one from TEUCT was able to visit the school we were unsure of what needed to be done to allow for The Good Samaritans continued success.

This group saw a return to Paraa Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park. They lucky enough to get to see the safari Big Five and enjoyed a legendary cruise to see the the Nile tumble over Murchison Falls. We also travelled to the source of The Nile and enjoyed a day of cultural sightseeing around Kampala, including a memorable visit to the Golden Mosque.

FUNDRAISING

Despite not knowing if international travel would be allowed until November 2021, Team 2022 worked incredibly hard to fundraise. They did a great job individually raising money through their own initiative. Fundraising efforts were somewhat hampered due to many Covid restrictions so the traditional afternoon tea made way for car-washing, Valentines Roses, Staffroom Coffee Mornings, Teddy Tombolas the return of The QEGS QUIZ, staff novelty boxing match and an outstanding Spring Fair. From Lego selling to long runs, Team 2022 worked hard to raise every penny.

ACHIEVEMENTS

With over £10,000 raised Team 2022 were able to paint the entire exterior of The Good Samaritan, update the classroom blackboards, buy new furniture for each classroom, establish a dedicated staffroom, and buy new beds for the domintaries and staff. Great excitement was caused when the baby class received delivery of a slide, merry-go-round and swing set which Team 2022 were so pleased to see being added to the area surrounding the original Good Samaritan Tree. Perhaps the most significant purchase was the first ever computer, allowing QEGS to have more contact with headmaster Joseph throughout the year.
